UPCOMING WALKS AND PROGRAMS
All About Purple Martins
Saturday, June 10 from 9:00-11:00 AM
Join Purple Martin landlord Cindy Heffley to learn about these long-distance travelers. The presentation will include information on Purple Martin identification, behavior, breeding, incubation, migration, and ways in which you can assist in supporting the growth of this species. Unless their is rain, after the presentation, participants are invited to join Cindy as she conducts nest checks. All ages are welcome. This presentation will take place at the Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge visitor contact station on Turkle Pond Road, Milton. Registration is required by writing to primehookowner@yahoo.com.
Weekly Purple Martin Nest Checks
Starting June 15, visitors are invited to join us as we conduct our Thursday Purple Martin nest checks through mid-July. Learn about these long-distance migrators and how we help them while they are visiting the area. The checks will be at 10:00 after a brief overview of the program. Checks are done quickly to lessen disturbance to the birds. If there is rain or extremely windy conditions, nest checks will not be conducted. Checking nests during extreme weather conditions causes stress on the birds. Alternate days will be posted on our social media pages. If you’d like to receive an email update, please let us know by sending an email to primehookowner@yahoo.com. Please be sure your hands are free of insect repellent/sunscreen/lotion/etc. if you wish to assist.
Prime Hook NWR in partnership with the Sussex Bird Club offers free Saturday bird walks.
